Fall 2011 Electrical Survey

Cumberland College, in an effort to identify specific training needs, has conducted a survey of its own with local and provincial electrical contractors.  A total of 50 electrical contractors (25 local and 25 provincial) were surveyed with 25 actual respondents (14 local and 11 provincial).  Contractors were asked the following 4 questions:

  1. In the next 6 – 8 months will you be hiring level 1 electrical apprentices, how many
  2. In the next 1 – 3 years will you be hiring level 1 electrical apprentices, how many
  3. In the next 3 – 5 years will you be hiring level 1 electrical apprentices, how many?
  4. What would you pay as a starting wage?

The results were:

  1. Locally – 7 positions or an average of .5 jobs per contractor; Provincially – 14 positions or an average of 1.27 jobs per contractor
  2. Locally – 8 positions or an average of .57 jobs per contractor; Provincially – 9 positions or an average of .87 jobs per contractor
  3. Generally, there was resistance on behalf of the contractors to speculate this far in advance, however locally there were 2 positions identified
  4. Locally the average starting wage is $13.20 per hour and provincially the average starting wage is $14.67 per hour

Several of the provincial respondents answered that they only hire journeyperson electricians and that they do not hire Level 1 apprentices, these participants were not asked how many journeypersons that they would hire.
